Making Impactful Presentations: Presenting Like a Pro Part 1

If you’re like me, the thought of speaking in public puts a pit right in your stomach. The days of wearing blazers and heels to class to present my final still haunt me. Presentations and public speaking go hand-in-hand with public relations, and with other industries too, so it’s something I’m constantly working to improve.

Rob Base and D.J. E-Z Rock sing it best when they say, “it takes two to make a thing go right.” Just like the song claims, two things are important when doing a presentation.

  1. A solid slide presentation

  2. A concise message to reach your audience

For now, we’re just going to talk about four things to remember when making a good slide presentation.

Stay Branded

When in doubt, brand it out. Incorporate your brand’s colors and typography into each slide. Not only does this help personalize your presentation, but it helps visually unify your company's brand across all mediums.

The goal of branding is to link your colors, typography and design to what you’re communicating so your audience thinks of you when they see that specific color or come across a similar message.

Keep it Simple

Text heavy slides are nobody’s friend. They are repetitive, hard to read and distract your audience from what you are saying.

A good slide should have short talking points to guide your presentation and summarize what you are talking about, but they shouldn’t take up every slide in the presentation.

Add Images

Have you ever sat through a presentation without any pictures or supporting imagery? It’s boring. No one enjoys a presentation without any pictures.

Add photos, icons or infographics to help get your point across and engage your audience. To make it more interesting, use personal photographs to help tell your story.

Make Sure it’s Relevant

If you’re using photos, quotes or graphics make sure they’re relevant to your message. Don’t want to distract your audience with something that is out of place or doesn’t help them understand.

Everything that goes into your slide presentation should support the message you are trying to convey.

Presentations make an opportunity to solidify your brand. Keep it simple. Slides are meant to be an aid in your presentation, not be the whole presentation. Add images to keep it interesting and use supporting imagery, quotes and graphics. Then, you’ll be making impactful presentations in no time.
